Former Minister Blames ECOWAS Treaty For The Influx Of Foreign Herders Into Nigeria

Former Agriculture Minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh has blamed the Abdulsalam military regime for the continuous influx of herders from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries into Nigeria.

Ogbeh said the ECOWAS Grazing Treaty signed by the military regime, allows uncontrolled movement of animals from the sub-region for grazing in Nigeria.

He asked President Bola Tinubu to revoke ECOWAS Grazing Treaty to stop the unrestricted inflow of killer herders into the country.

Ogbeh, who was the lead keynote speaker at the launching of the Young Women in Agriculture (YWA) champions in Nigeria, said the issue of insecurity in farmlands could easily be curbed if appropriate measures are induced.

He explained that under the pact, cows from Mali, Mauritania and Senegal entered Nigeria, and hardly wanted to leave, because of their access to abundant grass.

According to him, the farmer-herders clashes are mostly caused by the foreign herders who entered Nigeria fully armed.

He asked Tinubu’s administration to encourage other ECOWAS countries to design ranches for the grazing of cattle by their herders.
