FEC Exempts Payroll of Federal Universities, And Polys From IPPIS

Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the removal of the payroll of federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education from the Integrated Personnel Payment Information System (IPPIS).

The council now allows authorities of the tertiary institutions to start paying their staff directly, instead of through IPPIS, in a gradual return of autonomy to the federal institutions.

Education Minister, Professor Mamman Tahir, announced the decision to state house correspondents at the end of the meeting of the council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

The minister also said the authorities of the tertiary institutions are now empowered to recruit their staff, without recourse to the head of service of the federation.

Mamman said President Tinubu was worried over Vice Chancellors and Rectors leaving their duty posts for Abuja, to enroll their staff on IPPIS after recruitment.

The agitation for exemption from IPPIS, was one of the major planks of the demands of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) during their prolonged strike in 2022.

The academic staff union of universities later developed its payment platform, but it was rejected by the Buhari administration.

Today, council has graciously approved that. What that means is that going forward, the universities like the Honorable Minister of Education has said and other tertiary institutions, the polytechnics and colleges of education will be taken off the IPPIS.

What that means in simple language is that the university authorities and other tertiary institutions will now be paying their own personnel from their own end instead of relying on the IPPIS.
