Drug Trafficking On the Rise in Ogun, Fresh 79 Kilogram of Cannabis Intercepted At Imeko

Drug trafficking in Ogun state has continued to be in the rise, despite clampdown by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Last Friday, the operatives of the anti-narcotic agency intercepted a fresh consignment of cannabis at Imeko axis, close to Nigeria’s border with Benin Republic.

NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi on Sunday said one Ismail Ogun was intercepted in the community with 79 kilogram of cannabis.

The April 12 interception was made by NDLEA in the wake of 223 kilogram of the substance intercepted by soldiers from the 35 Army Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta last March 29.

The 223 kilogram drug was intercepted by soldiers on patrol at Mologede village, near Odeda.

Earlier on march 13, 24 kilogram of cannabis was also intercepted by NDLEA operatives in a commercial truck at Sagamu Interchange.

The following day, 123 sacks of cannabis weighing 3,173 kilogram were intercepted near Idiroko close to Benin Republic border.

Later on march 30, 137 blocks of cannabis weighing 71 kilogram was seized at Orile Imo Village, near the Sagamu interchange.

In 2023, NDLEA says it seized 14,405.3236 kilogram of cannabis sativa, 1,371 kilogram of methamphetamine, 881 kilogram of heroin and 1,986 kilogram of cocaine were seized across the state.

NDLEA says 605 users and traffickers including 108 female drugs were arrested during the period.

According to the NDLEA, the average of those arrested were between 30 and 60 years, while a handful of them were in their seventies.
