Defence Minister Orders Intelligence Agency to Go After Those Canvassing for Military Coup

Defence Minister, Bello Mattawale, has warned those asking the military to topple the Tinubu administration.

He directed the National Defence Intelligence Agency to go after anyone caught canvassing for a military takeover in the country.

His warning in a statement issued on Thursday was coming after the chief of defence staff, General Christopher Musa, last week warned that security operatives would go after those advocating a military coup in Nigeria.

Also, chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, this week assured that the military would not take over power, and would leave the democratically elected leaders to run the country.

The Defence Minister on Thursday condemned a viral video and inciting comments in the media, which were encouraging the toppling of Nigeria’s democratically elected leaders.

The minister described those making the calls as criminals, enemies of democracy, and agents of darkness.

According to him, the call was prosperous and naïve as the Nigerian military has come to terms with democratic governance in the country.

The call for violent change of government by the military is absurd, preposterous, and naive as the military has come to reality with a democratic government in Nigeria and is focused on its constitutional duty of defending the constitution.

The minister warns against the dangerous allure of coups. He said those calling for a coup do not love Nigeria.

Under the present government, there will be no military takeover of power.

He emphasizes the need for elected leaders to lead, while the military fulfills its duty of protecting the constitution.
