Court Sentences Landlord to Double Life Jails for Sexually Abusing Tenant’s Children

A 65 year old landlord, Igwe Ambrose, has been sentenced to a double life imprisonment for defiling and sexually abusing two minors.

The minors, aged seven and 11, are children of his tenant.

The prosecutor had told an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence that the landlord committee the act between January and June 2021 at the Shagari Housing Estate, in Ipaja, Lagos.

He was said to be sticking his hands in the private parts of the two girls.

Justice Abiola Soladoye convicting him on a four count charges of sexual assault by penetration.

She called the landlord a dirty old man who fingered and touched the breasts of the girls, under the pretext of helping them with their school homework.

The judge pronounced a life sentence for counts one and two, and three years each for counts three and four.

Subsequently, the defendant, identified as the assailant, found confirmation in the testimony of both their mother and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), who meticulously examined the crime scene, providing a detailed account of the assault and indecent treatment.

Following this compelling evidence, the judge reached a verdict, convicting the defendant on all four counts, as outlined in Sections 135 and 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

For counts one and two, carrying the weight of life imprisonment each, the defendant received a life sentence on each charge. On the other hand, for counts three and four, which stipulate a seven-year jail term, the judge imposed a seven-year imprisonment sentence for each count.

In addition to the legal consequences, the judge ordered the inclusion of the defendant’s name in the Sexual Offences Register maintained by the Lagos State Government, as emphasized by Soladoye.

During the proceedings, the State Counsel, Mrs. Olufunke Adegoke, meticulously presented the case, calling forth four witnesses, including two survivors, the mother of the survivors, and the IPO. Through the IPO, five exhibits were tendered, strengthening the prosecution’s case.
