AFCON 2023: Nigeria Beat Guinea-Bissau 1-0 to Progress to Last 16

Nigeria beat Guinea-Bissau 1-0 to progress to the last 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The winner came when Opa Sangante diverted a Moses Simon cross into his own net nine minutes before the break.

Jose Peseiro’s side finished second in Group A behind Equatorial Guinea, who beat hosts Ivory Coast 4-0.

The Super Eagles will face the second-placed side from Group C, which will be Senegal, Guinea, or Cameroon, in the last 16 on Saturday (20:00 GMT).

Meanwhile, Ghana conceded twice in stoppage time to throw away a two-goal lead to draw with Mozambique and almost certainly exit the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana looked to be cruising into the last 16 thanks to two Jordan Ayew penalties, one in each half.

But Geny Catamo pulled one back from the spot 91 minutes before Reinildo Mandava’s header broke Ghana’s hearts.

Also, host nation Ivory Coast will have to rely on other results to avoid a shock Africa Cup of Nations group-stage exit after Equatorial Guinea thrashed the elephants in a huge upset in Abidjan.

Emilio Nsue’s double, Pablo Ganet’s 25-yard free-kick and Yannick Buyla’s late goal gave Equatorial Guinea a famous win that sealed the top spot in Group A.

Ivory Coast must sweat on qualification after finishing third in the group.
