Abiodun Orders Evacuation and Integrity Tests of Buildings Affected By Abeokuta Gas Tanker Explosion

Governor Dapo Abiodun has ordered the evacuation of buildings affected by the Saturday gas tanker explosion at Ita Oshin, Abeokuta, and the Ogun state capital.

He also directed the conduct of integrity test on the affected buildings, to determine if it is safe to continue to reside in them.

The Governor also promised adequate compensation to those whose property were damaged or destroyed during the explosion.

Abiodun issued the directive on Sunday, while paying on the spot assessment of damages done to properties and businesses at the explosion site.

The Governor also pledged that government would pick the bills of treatment of those injured in the blast, who are now hospitalized.

According to him, the emergency agencies had already taken stock of all the businesses and houses affected by the explosion.

He directed the state environment and transportation ministry to ensure that all the truck heads conveying petroleum products into Ogun state are road worthy.

Also, the Governor said he would today meet members of petrol tanker drivers association on the safety of tankers plying roads in the state.

The governor further said that his administration would put in place the required legislation to provide the required oversight for the industry, adding that he has directed the Ministries of Environment and Transportation to ensure that the truck heads that are carrying petroleum products into the state are road worthy.

He said that a meeting of the state government with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association has been called for Monday in his office to look at the issue of the safety of tankers plying roads in the state.

He stated that there was a need to now begin to look at the kind of policy frameworks and regulatory oversights that would ensure that such an accident does not happen again in the state.

Governor Abiodun charged the Standard Organisation of Nigeria to be on top of the fast evolution of the industry, saying that they should, as a matter of urgency, ensure that the standards of the CNG tanks used by trucks meet the required standards.
