NATO leaders are gathering in Lithuania for a crucial summit that could shape the direction of the war in Ukraine and the future of the western alliance.

The 31 allies hope to show Russia they have the resolve to support Ukraine militarily for the long term.

Also, They arrive with a welcome boost after Turkey dropped its objections to Sweden joining the alliance.

But there remains disagreement over what to say about Ukraine’s own ambitions of future membership.

Some NATO nations are reluctant to grant automatic membership, fearing the promise of near-automatic membership could give Russia an incentive both to escalate and drag out the war.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine will be part of NATO, expecting from a summit of the bloc in Lithuania an “algorithm” for Kyiv to officially join it.

“We are still working on the wording, that is, on the specific words of such confirmation, but we already understand the fact that Ukraine will be in the alliance,”

Zelenskyy said late on Monday in his nightly video address on the eve of the meeting.

“And we are working to make the algorithm for gaining membership as clear and fast as possible.”
