Tropical Storm Ravaging California with Record Floods In US

Tropical storm Hilary is Barreling through southern California where 26 million people are under flood warnings.

It is the first such storm to hit the state in 84 years – with record rains flooding loss Angeles and desert areas like Palm Springs and Death Valley.

A state of emergency has been declared by the governor, while President Joe Biden has ordered in federal aid.

School classes and flights have been cancelled, with landslides, downed trees and flooded homes reported across southern California.

Earlier, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the region as residents braced for Hilary but no major damage was reported.

Experts say recent abnormal weather events hitting the US and other countries have been influenced by human-caused climate change.

Hilary made landfall along the Mexican coast in a sparsely populated area about 150 miles (250 kilometers) south of Ensenada Sunday, then moved through mudslide-prone Tijuana, threatening the improvised homes that cling to hillsides just south of the U.S. border.

By Sunday evening, the storm had moved over San Diego and was headed north into inland desert areas.

As evening fell in California, the National Weather Service in Los Angeles warned of significant flooding risk throughout populous mountain areas along the coast northeast of Los Angeles.
