At least 16 people are feared to have been killed in shootings that took place on Wednesday night in Lewiston, Maine.

Police have named Robert Card, 40, as a person of interest, saying he is “armed and dangerous”.

The gunman remains at large – but hundreds of officers across the state are involved in the manhunt.

Police said they responded to reports at two locations: a restaurant called Schemengees Bar & Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley.

Lewiston, a small city of about 38,000, has been put on lockdown – businesses have been told to close and people to stay at home.

Residents in Lewiston and nearby Lisbon have been told to shelter in place.

Hundreds of police officers are looking out for 40-year-old Robert Card, who is a person of interest in connection with mass shootings in the town of Lewiston.

“We have literally hundreds of police officers working around the state of Maine to investigate this case to locate Mr Card, who is a person of interest,” Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck told a news conference, according to Reuters.

The state of Maine lacks several major types of gun safety laws, including regulation of assault weapons, universal background checks, and “red flag” laws that allow law enforcement to temporarily disarm people legally deemed dangerous, a gun safety advocacy group Brady said in a statement, according to Reuters.
