Prayer services to mark the new year have been held all over the world in the past 24 hours – including in the Vatican, and among Buddhist monks in Bangkok, to name just a few.

Tens of thousands of people have filled the streets of London and Edinburgh to watch fireworks displays ushering in the new year.

Across Europe, people have gathered at iconic landmarks to mark the start of 2024.

Africa has also now said goodbye to 2023 – joining Australia, New Zealand and countries across Asia.

Residents of the Pacific Nation of Kiribati were the first to greet the new year.

As ever, there were impressive displays in Hong Kong, Sydney and Dubai.

In Germany, police in the capital say at least 15 officers have been injured in clashes with people during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

People were firing fireworks at officers in spots around berlin, they say and more than 230 people have been arrested.

Countries from around the world have ushered in the New Year with countdowns and vibrant firework displays.

The Pacific nation of Kiribati was the first country to welcome the New Year, beginning celebrations one hour before neighbouring New Zealand.
