Ogun State Initiates Farmers Training To Tackle Food Insecurity

The Ogun State Government has initiated a comprehensive training program for farmers as part of moves to actively address food insecurity in the state.

The training session was conducted for over 400 farmers from Odeda, Ifo, Abeokuta North, Abeokuta South, and Ewekoro Local Government Areas as part of the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP) of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Namdam Integrated Service Limited, a private firm, organized the training in the Abeokuta zone, with plans to train 2,600 farmers, starting with the initial 400.

The training, held in Abeokuta, focused on equipping farmers with essential skills such as developing business plans, choosing appropriate crops, understanding suitable fertilizers for optimal yield, and establishing efficient distribution channels within the state.

Field specialists from OGSTEP, Opayemi Adejuwon, speaking to Rockcity FM said Governor Dapo Abiodun has mandated the ministry to tackle food security by training 40,000 farmers.

To further enhance agricultural practices, the state has engaged private consultants like value change development funds to aggregate and link farmers with off-takers, providing training on modern agricultural methods.

The farmers’ support project, funded by the World Bank, aims to increase food production in the state and make it more affordable.

To qualify for the project, farmers must be actively engaged, possess at least one hectare of land, secure 50% starting funds for crop farmers, and 70% for livestock farmers, and be registered with a National Identification Number (NIN) to prevent fraudulent activities.
