Israel Vows to Continue Attacks in Gaza, With or Without International Support

Israel foreign minister has said it will continue the war in Gaza “with or without international support”.

A ceasefire at this stage of the conflict would be “a gift” to Hamas and allow it to return, Eli Cohen warned.

Israel is facing mounting pressure over the number of Palestinian civilians killed by its military in Gaza and the worsening humanitarian crisis there.

On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.

And in his strongest comments yet, US President Joe Biden said Israel was losing support worldwide because of its “indiscriminate bombing” of Gaza.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is expected to hold talks with the Israeli government on Thursday.

Sullivan is expected to urge Israeli leaders “to move to a different phase from the kind of high intensity operations seen today”.

On Wednesday, Sullivan held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman where they discussed creating a lasting peace in the middle east.

Hamas broke through Israel’s heavily guarded perimeter on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages – some of whom were released during a brief truce.

Hamas says 18,600 people have been killed and 50,000 injured in the enclave since the start of the Gaza war.

Despite the criticism from its main ally, Israel vowed to press on with its war on Hamas.

Biden’s national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, will travel to Israel on Thursday to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has said there is “disagreement” with Washington over how a post-conflict Gaza would be governed.
