Youths Loot Warehouse in Abuja, Cart Away Bags of Rice, Maize and Other Items

Hundreds of youths have invaded a warehouse stocked with food items in Abuja, amidst economic hardships in the country.

They emptied the warehouse, belonging to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministry of Agriculture, at the Karimo phase three region of the territory.

The youths joined by those from neighboring communities, forced their way into the warehouse located at Gwagwalada axis of Abuja, as early as 7 A.M.

For two hours, they looted bags of maize, other grains, and other items in the warehouse.

Later, armed policemen were deployed to disperse the looters.

Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh said the situation is under control.

She said some people were arrested by the police.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said the looted warehouse does not belong to the agency.

Spokesman of the agency, Manzo Ezekiel said their warehouse is still intact.

Last Friday, a BUA truck conveying spaghetti was also intercepted in Zaria, while in transit in Kaduna state by youths who carted away everything in the truck.

A resident, Jaafar Aminu, said the looting continued unhindered till 9 am when he spoke to our reporter.

He said some residents as well as persons from neighboring Jiwa and Karmo towns trooped towards the site to partake in the loot.

He said the situation has caused a gridlock on the Gwagwa-Karmo road, which leads to the Dei-Dei and Jabi axis, respectively.
