WAFU B U17: Adeleke’s Late Strike Earns Nigeria 3-2 Win over Ghana’s Starlets

Five-time world champions, the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria edged Ghana 3-2 in an entertaining game at the university of Ghana sports stadium on Tuesday evening to secure a third place finish at the 2024 West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B Under 17 championship.

The FIFA under 17 world cup has been expanded to 48 teams, with Africa expected to produce ten representatives for next year’s tournament in Qatar.

The Confederation of African Football will confirm in the coming days whether three or four teams will qualify from WAFU b for the under 17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking at the post-match press conference shortly after his side defeated the black starlets, Golden Eaglets manager Manu Garba made a case for four teams to qualify from WAFU zone b to the U17 AFCON.

Garba highlighted that the Golden Eaglets are the most successful team in FIFA U17 world cup history, with Ghana ranking third overall since the competition began in 1985.

Unwilling to give in to defeat, Nigeria’s Abdulmuiz Adeleke struck four minutes before the half-time mark when he nodded in the equaliser from a pull-out by John Ogwuche.

As the attacking-intensified match was heading towards a penalty shootout, Adeleke’s late strike secured a spot for Nigeria at next year’s continental finals.

Both sides had failed to qualify for the 2025 tournament after they were beaten in the semi-finals.

Ghana lost 2-1 to Burkina Faso while Ivory Coast edged Nigeria 1-0 as well.
