US Accuses Nigeria Over Religious Freedom Violation

The United States of America ( US ) reportedly accuses Nigeria of severe violations of religious freedom.

The US commission on international religious freedom published this in their April 2023 annual report which was released on Monday.

The commission stated that criminal activity and violent armed group incidents impacting religious freedom has worsened in Nigeria.

The commission cited instances of a Shari’a court sentencing sheikh Kabara to death for blasphemy and judicial authorities sentencing human rights leader, Mubarak Bala to 24 years in prison for blasphemy among others.

The US noted that the federal authorities’ efforts to address violence impacting religious freedom by instituting harsher punishments against perpetrators and improving military efforts to neutralize Islamist fighters in the north, as well as strengthening the process of investigation and arrest perpetrators of these attacks.

It, however, said, the effectiveness of these efforts is in question, while in some regions, state and local officials failed to fully prosecute individuals who incited mob violence against alleged blasphemers.
