University Education is Not for Everybody, Says Gov Umahi

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state has said that university education is not for everybody.

According to the governor, basic education at secondary and technical schools is what other countries are striving to achieve.

Umahi said that qualifications acquired at secondary and vocational schools should equip one to start up something.

The governor spoke on the issue while receiving a delegation of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund at the Ebonyi state government house in Abakaliki.

He said there is the need for the federal government to sit with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve the problems facing the prolonged lecturers strike.

Umahi said it is not possible for federal government to borrow the 1.1 trillion naira required to implement the recommendations of the Nimi Briggs panel.

He however, said that the demands of the striking lecturers could be met little by little while calling for understanding of each others’ position by both ASUU and the federal government.

According to the governor, both sides need to meet half way in order to re-open the public universities shut down over the strike since February 14.
