Top Muslim Leaders Wade Into Crisis Rocking Egba Muslim Community

Prominent Egba Muslims have begun intervention in the crisis rocking the Egba Muslim Community, over the suspension of the Grand Chief Imam of Egbaland, Alhaji Saad Bamgbola.

Leading the intervention are the Secretary General of the Nigeria Supreme council on Islamic affairs, Propfessor Ishaq Oloyede, and Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sarafadeen Ishola, who is the Baba Adeen of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States.

The crisis erupted after notable Muslim leaders in Egbaland, led by Retired Naval Captain, Rasheed Raji suspended the Grand Chief Imam over several allegations, including high handedness, conflict of interests, and mishandling of funds.

Reacting to the suspension, the Chief Imams of Egba Oke Ona, Egba Owu and Egba Gbagura, said the Muslim leaders did not carry them along, and that they lack the powers to take such a weighty decision.

The three sectional Chief Imams insisted that Alhaji Bamgbola remains the Grand Chief mam of Egbaland, warning that the crisis may lead to a religious war.

The Nigeria’s envoy to the UK speaking to newsmen from London, said major stakeholders had initiated peace talks, while urging parties to the crisis to ceasefire.

He urged them to stop further issuance of statement on the crisis.
