Ten Burnt To Death, 12 Injured In Petrol Tanker Explosion In Ogun

Ten persons have been burnt to death in a petrol tanker explosion on the Shagamu-Ijebu Ode express way in Ogun State.

12 others were critically injured in the explosion, following an auto crash around Araromi town axis of the expressway.

The explosion, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, involved a truck, two tankers and bus, all engulfed in fire.

The Ogun State sector commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ahmed Umar, breaking the news to newsmen in Abeokuta, said all the ten persons burnt to death, were passengers in the bus.

The commander said that the casualty figure may rise as the rescue operation was still ongoing.

According to him, witnesses said that one of the trucks marked  AKL198ZT, whose driver was speeding excessively, lost control and brushed the side of another petrol tanker.

This led to a fire outbreak, which spread to other vehicles, resulting in an explosion.

The FRSC commander said the bodies of those burnt to death had been deposited at the morgue of the Olabisi Onabanjo University teaching hospital, Sagamu.

In another auto crash, one person died, and another injured on the Abeokuta-Sango Ota expresway, also in Ogun State.

In the accident which took place on Wednesday night, a containerized truck marked LAR654YD, crashed and fell on an unmarked car, at Eruku axis of the road.

Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpeh, said the driver of the truck, following his excessive speed, lost control of the vehicle, and fell on the car.
