Student Protests Spread to Edo Over Closure of Public Universities

Protests by students of public universities over the continued strike by lecturers, has spread to Benin city, the Edo state capital.

Students of the University of Benin on Wednesday, protested round the gates of the institution and sorrounding areas, demanding the re-opening of the public universities shut down since by the lecturers’ strike since February 2022.

Other group of students from tertiary institutions across the state also protested at the city centre, causing traffic gridlock.

They blocked ring road and other major roads in the city, vowing to sustain the protests until their schools are re-opened.

The protests began in Abuja, and spread to Ibadan where a group of students of the University Of Ibadan, converged on the gates of the institution.

The protest was foiled at the University Of Lagos, with the stationing of armed policemen at the main gate into the university.
