State Houses Of Assembly Reject Councils Autonomy In Fresh Constitutional Amendment Bills

Again, the amendment of the 1999 constitution has ended with most of the state houses of assembly refusing to ratify the local government autonomy bill.

That was the outcome of the prolonged fresh constitutional amendment by the ninth National Assembly and the 36 state Houses of Assembly.

On Tuesday, both chambers of the National Assembly resolved to transmit to president Buhari for his assent, 35 bills out of the 44 constitutional bills forwarded to state assemblies for ratification.

According to the president of the National Assembly Constitutional Amendment Committee, senator Ovie Omo Agege, nine out of the 44 constitutional bills, including local government autonomy, were rejected by the state houses of assembly.

Omo Agege said that 24 out of the 36 state houses of assembly considered the 44 bills, ratifying 35 of the bills.

The 35 constitutional amendment bills, according to the senate deputy president, met the requirements of section nine, sub section two of the constitution.

He listed state houses of assembly yet to submit their reports on the 44 constitutional bills as including those of Gombe, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kwara, Oyo, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara States.
