Governor Sanwo Olu of Lagos state has canvased for press freedom to strengthen accountability in governance and Nigeria’s nascent democracy.
The governor cautioned politicians and political office holders against stifling the media.
Sanwo Olu, speaking at a workshop organized by the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Lagos said journalism is not only a noble profession but it gives the general public an independent assessment of situations.
The governor who describes press freedom as vital in a democracy, said media helps members of the public to hold government accountable at all times.
He however contends that it is the responsibilities of the media to understand that there is a thin red line that must not be crossed and there is also need for the self regulation of its activities.
According to him, this requires that media managers ensure good governance and self regulation of the digital space to check fake and false news.
