REPS TO CRIMINALIZE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WIDOWS

The House of Representatives is considering a bill seeking to criminalize any form of discriminatory widowhood practices in the country.

The bill wants to amend the violence against person’s act 2015.

According to the bill, three year jail term or a N100,000 fine or both, await anyone who inflict harmful widowhood practices on a widow, or incite or aid any form of oppression of a widow.

Also, the bill stipulates a two year jail term or N100, 000 fine or both, for anyone who receives or assists another person to oppress a widow in any form.

The bill passed the second reading during the Thursday plenary of the house.
