Police Repel Robbers Attack On Tarmac In Abeokuta, Phone Dealer Killed

Armed policemen have repelled attacks by an eight member robbery gang on a major phone market at Oke Ilewo/Ibara axis of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

One of the phone dealers, identified as Dayo Bankole, was killed during the invasion of the market, popularly called Tarmac by the robbery gang at about 5.30 am on Wednesday.

One of the robbers, Adeniyi Shakiru, was arrested during the exchange of gunfire between the gang and security operatives, including policemen and Amotekun personnel.

Spokesman of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi said the robbers on invading the phone marker fired gunshots sporadically, while carting away expensive phones.

A police team from Ibara police station, led by its divisional police officer, Abayomi Adeniji, joined by Amotekun operatives rushed to the market, and engaged the robbers in a shoot out.

The gunfire forced shops and banks in the axis to hurriedly shut down, while motoritsts and other people fled for safety.

Oyeyemi said the robbers bowing to superior gunfire, took to their heel, but one of them was arrested, while others managed to escape.

He listed items recovered from the arrested suspected robbers as including charms and a locally made double barrel gun.

The outgoing state Police Commissioner, Frank Mba, had directed police to launch a manhunt for other members of the robbery gang.

Mba, now an assistant Inspector General of Police, asked members of the public, especially hospitals in the city to be on the lookout for anyone with gunshot injuries.
