Police IG Accuses Some Govs Of Sponsoring Attacks On Campaign Billboards

The Inspector General of Police (IG), Usman Baba has accused some of the state government of sponsoring thugs and state security outfits to disrupt political activities and rallies of the opposition political parties in their states.

He also accused some of the governors of influencing the prevention of erection of campaign bill boards, pulling others down, as well as denying them space for campaign or peaceful political congregation.

The police chief spoke on Thursday during a meeting with heads of political parties, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and major political stakeholders at the force headquarters in Abuja.

The police inspector general did not identify the affected governors, but said 52 political violence have been recorded since the take off of electioneering campaign last September 28 in 22 states.

He said the situation was more worrisome as political violence has been extended to the personnel and assets of INEC, as recently in Ogun and Osun states.

Baba warns that police would tackle the worrisome trend that is constituting threat to the 2023 polls.
