Okupe Pays N13 Million Fine To Escape Jail Term For Money Laundering

Director General of Peter Obi campaign Council, Dr. Doyin Okupe has paid the N13 million fine option, given to him by a Federal High Court, which sentenced him to a two year jail term for money laundering on Monday.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu convicting him, had given an option of the fine which must be paid latest by 4.30 P.M. on Monday. The judge had ordered that the politician be taken to the Kuje Custodial Centre, Abuja, if he failed to meet the deadline for the payment of the fine.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, reacting to the conviction said it would not affect his ongoing electioneering campaign. Obi, addressing newsmen in Akwa Ibom State on Monday, for his electioneering campaign in the state, said people could do anything about people around him.

He, however, said this would not stop his presidential ambition, adding that he believes in the rule of law, and would not be demoralized.

Recall that Dr. Doyin Okupe, the Director General of the Peter Obi presidential campaign council, was jailed two years by a federal high court, Abuja, for breaching the money laundering act.
