The Ogun state government has threatened to shut down some eateries and food outlets in the state for poor hygiene.

The state government who issued a seven day ultimatum to the affected eateries and food outlets in the Oke-Ilewo axis of Abeokuta, the state capital, asked them to make remedy before the law act on them.

The state commissioner for environment, Ola Oresanya, gave the ultimatum on Tuesday

after inspecting the affected eateries and food outlets in the state.

According to him, during the inspection, some accumulated fats, oils and grease and other food materials were discovered in a confined chamber, which were not scooped daily, thus allowing their breakdown by microbes which release toxic waste.

He also said the affected eateries and food outlet were discovered to discharge their untreated waste-water directly into the public drain, open holes were seen within their septic tanks holding faecal matters, general poor housekeeping and as well as evidence of rat infestation within their stores’ areas.

Oresanya advised the affected business owners to immediately improve their operational hygiene to safeguard their customers and residents of the state from the risk of food poison or face prosecution if they did not change.
