Ogun Teach Program Teachers Cry Out Over Irregular Salaries

Hundreds of teachers recruited by the Ogun state government, under its Ogun-Teach Program, have cried out over irregular payment of salaries.

The two thousand teachers were recruited between November and December 2021, on a two year contract, to address the acute shortage of teachers in the state’s secondary schools and technical colleges.

Degree holders among them are placed on a monthly salary of 40,000 naira, while their colleges of education counterparts receive 30,000 naira.

Most of the teachers who spoke with a Rockcity FM correspondent, Tobi Ojeleye, complained over the irregularity of their salaries, saying it is affecting them negatively, amidst the rising cost of living.

Investigations by Ojeleye, shows that batch A and B of the teachers who resumed duties in November and December 2021, received their November and December 2021 salaries in January 2022.

They also received January and February 2022 salaries in early March, and March 2022 salaries later in the month.

The teachers also said the salaries for the months of April and May 2022, were paid to them, on the eve of Eid El-Kabir, leaving the June salary still unpaid.

Chairman of the state universal basic education board, Doctor Femi Majekodunmi told Ojeleye, that the state government is aware of the issue, and intends to regularize their salaries payment very soon.

Majekodunmi also assured that government intends to convert them to regular teachers in the state’s public schools, before the expiration of their two-year contract.

The SUBEB chairman also promises that three thousand more of Ogun-Teach program teachers will be recruited soon to meet the target of five thousand, when the finance of the state government improves.
