Ogun Renovates MKO Abiola Family Home in Abeokuta for Democracy Day Celebration

The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday, directed the state’s Ministry of Housing to immediately give a face-lift to the house of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late MKO Abiola, at Gbagura.

Nigerians are today celebrating the twenty fifth year of unbroken democracy day, since the return of military to the barracks in 1999, after a prolonged rule.

The date June 12, is acknowledged as the harbinger of 25 years of democracy which Nigeria in enjoying today.

The date June 12 is the product of the struggle to actualize the annulled results of the June 12, 1993 presidential poll won by Late Bashorun MKO Abiola.

In Ogun state, the home state of the acclaimed winner of the poll, the state government had renovated the family home of Abiola at Oja Agbo, Gbagura in Abeokuta.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Lekan Adeniran, in a statement said Governor Dapo Abiodun ordered the renovation of the family home, ahead of today’s democracy day.

Adeniran said the governor wants the family home to get a facelift to make it befitting and conducive for pro-democracy activists, converging there this morning.

Deputy Head of Abiola Family, Alhaji Tajudeen Abiola thanked the state government for the gesture, saying it was beneficial to the family and community, as the collapsed external drainage system had been fixed.

One of Abiola’s son, Ameen Abiola said his family would be grateful for the various efforts aimed at bringing alive the memory of his late father.

Abiola, a business mogul and philanthropist, was believed to have won the June 12 presidential election in 1993, which was annulled by  Babangida.

Abiola later declared himself as president and was consequently arrested.

He eventually died in detention on July 7, 1998, in very controversial circumstances.
