Ogun Customs Intercepts Smuggled Rice In 73 Trucks

Ogun State command of Nigeria Customs Service says it intercepted 44,993 fifty kilogramme bags of rice smuggled in 73 trucks from Benin Republic.

The command’s comptroller, Camidele Makinde, who announced the seizure at his Idiriko Command post on Tuesday, said they were seized between February 6 when he assumed office, till date.

The comptroller said the command had generated revenue totaling N58.6 million since the re-opening of the Idiroko border last April.

According to him, the revenue was generated from the auction and sale of seized perishable contraband and other highly combustible items, including petrol.

He listed the seized items since February 2022, as including 16,224 kegs of petrol, 3,629 unit of disused tyres, 120 cartons of foreign shoes, 41 sacks of 940 wraps of cannabis, and 2,250 packets of tramadol.

Others were 89 bales of smuggled textile, 191 units of vehicle compressors, cartons of foreign wines, 4,700 bags of cement, 3 bales and 384 pieces of used bags and 170 cartons of poultry products.

He puts the overall duty payable value of the smuggled items at over N4.8 billion.
