Ogun State Government has started arming female students in the state public secondary schools with tear gas canister to protect themselves from sexual predators.

Already, 200 of the students had been provided with the tear gas canister.

Director of Women Empowerment Services in the Women Affairs Ministry, Mrs Wonuola Kazeem made this known at a meeting on improving access to community based psychology assistance of violence against women and girls in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The Director said the ministry officials had been visiting schools to educate and empower students on gender based violence and to reduce harassment and bullying in schools.

She said the state government could no longer allow the incident of gender based violence in schools to continue.

Also, the director of administration of the Centre for Wealth, Health and Informal Centre, Abeokuta, Atinuke Odukoya said a survey conducted had revealed the rampant of sexual assaults in schools in Ogun, Oyo and Osun States.

According to her, in Ogun State,the issue of gender based violence within schools setting was very alarming.

She cited the use of diabolical means by secondary schools pupils in the state to obtain sex from either colleagues or teachers.
