Obasanjo Says Parties’ 2023 Campaign Taken Over By Job Hunters And Minions

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo says the style of the ongoing campaign by politicians for the February and March 2023 polls is becoming worrisome.

The political campaign, according to him, has been taken over by insults, lies, selfish interests and diversion, instead of critical issues of national issues and progress.

Obasanjo who made the observation in Port Harcourt, at an International Conference, said minions, gatekeepers and job hunters had taken over the electioneering campaigns.

He accused them of building rings around candidates, blocking them from the realities and deep understanding of trends in the country’s social and economic systems.

The former president said there was the need to redirect Nigeria’s political steps to the right direction, or the ongoing electoral process would not produce the right leadership.

The former general insisted that politics was not a filthy game and emphasized that most actors are aware of all the norms and principles.

He claimed that players who confuse the beginning with the end or subscribe to the infamous Machiavellian maxim that the ends justify the means are setting themselves up for an unrestrained race in which anything is permissible.

“During campaigns, some leaders sound as if they plan to reinvent Nigeria and create new Nigerians overnight. That is because they miss the aspect of democracy that emphasizes continuity, stability and predictability.

“We must take some time for introspection and ask if we have been doing the right things for ourselves and for future generations. It is not rocket science to get back on the path of democracy and social justice. It begins with self-commitment, then leadership commitment”, Obasanjo further disclosed.
