Northern Governors Forum Chairman Backs the Proposed State Police Force
The chairman of the northern states governors forum, Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya has backed the proposed state police force.
The Gombe state governor, however, said the issue must undergo the normal legislative process.
He was optimistic that a bill on the proposal will sail through the national assembly, and obtain the additional requirement of approval of two third of the 36 state houses of assembly.
The forum chairman spoke on the issue, while addressing the state house correspondents, after a meeting with President Tinubu at the presidential villa on Tuesday.
According to him, the centralized policing is limiting the capacity of the state governors, to effectively manage security issues in their respective states.
He expressed concern that the state police commissioners are not answerable to the governors, but the inspector general of police based in Abuja.

Already, the proposal has received the backing of the presidency, the Nigeria governor’s forum and the National Economic Council.
The governor also highlighted efforts to address out-of-school children in the Northern region, pledging to enroll and retain students from primary to tertiary levels.
He said, That issue was top on the agenda of our last meeting because it is a very big menace that we are unfortunately contending with but mind you it is a build-up of the past; over 50 years or so of neglect of the educational system.
We are trying to see that this time around, with the window we’ve gotten especially with basic education as service delivery for all, the States are up and doing and we shall enroll the people and retain them so that they will continue from primary to secondary and even tertiary level.
That is a herculean task and all the Governors are doing their best and we shall continue to do so.
