NLC Says No Apology to TUC, Could Go on Strike Without Working with Any Other Labour Centre

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it could champion the cause of the Nigerian workers without going into alliance with any labour union or organization.

Its President Joe Ajaero said NLC is an independent labour center and act on the directive of its national executive council on issues affecting workers.

Ajaero spoke while fielding questions from newsmen why NLC failed to carry along the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in its two-day nationwide protests the economic hardships in the country.

TUC had accused NLC of acting unilaterally in fixing the date for the protests, despite working together to organize the protests.

But Ajaero told newsmen that NLC has been a labour center since 1977 and was not contesting with any other labour center on issues concerning workers.

He explained that NLC would always obey the directive of its national executive council and look for those who share its views on issues.

Ajaero said the NLC has no explanation to any other organizations on its decisions, adding that other organizations could take their decisions and would not be queried by the NLC.

For instance, Ajaero said in all agreement signed by the organized labour with the Tinubu administration, he signed for the NLC and not the entire organized labour.
