Nigeria Facing Acute Shortage of Safe Blood

Nigeria is facing a major shortage of safe blood in its blood bank, according to the National Blood Service Commission.

The commission says the blood in the bank can not cater for Nigeria’s large population.

Acting director of the commission, Doctor Omale Amedu made this known in Abuja, at the take off of the sensitization on the need for voluntary blood donors.

With over 200 million population, he says that Nigeria requires a minimum of two million safe blood units in its blood bank.

He, however, lamented that only 25,000 units are now in the blood bank, calling for volunteers to donate freely into the bank.
