National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA ) says its operatives are placing some identified cannabis plantations in Ogun State, under intense surveillance.

Also, major drug joints have been placed under watch by the operatives.

The state NDLEA commander, Mrs Ibiba Jane Odili, made this known on Thursday in Abeokuta, at a news briefing held to mark the 2023 UN day against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

She said that ndlea operatives at the appropriate time would raid the cannabis plantations, destroy them and arrest their operators.

The NDLEA commander said several drug joints had been raided in the past weeks in Abeokuta,

the state capital, and other parts of the state,,during whch many drug traffickers and users were arrested.

According to the NDLEA commander, since last february, a total of 141 suspected male and 34 female drug traffikers and dealers had been picked up by the anti-narcotic operatives across the state

Out of those arrested, she said that 60 were charged to court, 33 including six females and 27 males, were convicted and ninety four are still in court.

During the period, the command also seized 3.14 tonnes of cannabis sativa, 9.42 kilogrammes of psychotropic substance ,

29.8 grammes of cocaine,  1,446.5 litres of skuches,  7.65 litres of codeine and  1.8906 kilogrsammes of methamphetamine.

Odili said, “The operation uncovered a locally-made pistol along with three cartridges, underscoring the dangerous link between drug trafficking and illicit firearms.

“Also, during the second phase, which resulted in the arrest of one suspect, 63 grams of cannabis sativa was seized while two drug users were apprehended.

“Additionally, a seizure of 1.1kg of abandoned cannabis sativa further disrupted the drug trade in the area.

“In the third and final phase of the operations, two drug users were apprehended while a seizure of 500 grams of abandoned cannabis sativa was recorded.

“The cumulative impact of all three phases revealed a chilling reality: a total of three suspects were apprehended,

along with 14 drug users. The combined weight of the confiscated cannabis sativa amounted to a staggering 6.2kg abandoned and seized.”
