Nationwide Strike Looms As Government, Labour Talks On New Petrol Price, Breaks Down

A nationwide strike is looming, as the talks between federal government and the organized labour broke down on Wednesday, on the new pump price for petrol.

The Organized Labour rejected the new pump price and threatened to stay away from further talks, except something is done swiftly on the price template.

President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, stated this while addressing newsmen at the end of the deadlocked meeting, convened by federal government at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Former Governor Adams Oshiomole led federal government team, which included the Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari and Head of Service of Federation, Dr. Folashade Esan.

Ajaero, who led the organized labour to the talks, demanded the immediate withdrawal of the vexatious pricing template to facilitate free discussion by stakeholoders.

The NLC president expressed concern over the sudden stoppage of the subsidy when there was provision for it in the 2023 budget uptil the end of June 2023.

Presidential Spokesman, Dele Alake speaking on behalf of federal government, told newsmen that the meeting was fruitful, but would not go into details.

The spokesman, however, said the talks would continue in a very short notice.
