More Governors On Money Laundering Watchlist, Says EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says the number of state governors on its watchlist for suspected money laundering, is on the increase.
The agency says the governors on the watch list are attempting to launder the existing N200, N500 and N1,000 notes, to be replaced by new notes between December 15, 2022 and January 31, 2023.
EFCC chairman, Abdurasheed Bawa, addressing the State House Corespondents on Thursday, after a meeting with president Buhari, said the figure was on the rise.
He did not mention the names of the governors and warned against being misrepresented.
Two weeks ago, the EFCC chairman, said three governors, including two in the north and one in the south were on the EFCC watch list.
According to him, some of the governors are likely to resort to paying staff salaries physically, instead of through the usual bank alerts.
