Tension has gripped Owode Yewa, near Benin Republic border, as mob kills military officer following the killing of two siblings by soldiers over the smuggling of rice.

An angry youth protesting the death later killed an air force officer who unknowingly ran into them.

Spokesman of Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident which occurred on Sunday.

Oyeyemi says the state Police Commissioner, Lanre Bankole, had directed the homicide department of the command to investigate the incident.

Witnesses said the soldiers had accosted one of the siblings who was conveying smuggled rice in a vehicle.

An argument ensued after the sibling called in his brother, who invited two other persons, during which the soldiers killed the two siblings and fled the scene.

Following this, a mob went on rampage, set bonfire on road leading to the Benin Republic border, and killed an air force officer who ran into them.
