Markets with Dirty Environment to Be Shut Down In Ogun

Markets with dirty environment in Ogun state, are to be shut down, as part of moves to prevent the spread of cholera in the state.

Also to be shut down are markets lacking proper waste disposal arrangements.

Managing Director of Ogun State Waste Management Authority, Abayomi Hunye, reads the riot act, at a meeting with executives of the state association of market women and men in Abeokuta, on Friday.

Hunye, who also is the special adviser to the state governor on environment, said improper disposal of wastes in markets across the state, was breeding rodents, vectors and flies which infest commodities being sold to members of the public.

He said despite the provision of big waste collection bins in most of the markets, some of the traders are still disposing wastes improperly.

According to the special adviser, some of the traders still prefer dumping of wastes into the drainage channels in front of their shops, thereby blocking the drainage channels.

He said such acts always caused erosion and offensive odor in the market space whenever it rains.

However, some of the traders, with their market leaders looking away, dump their waste in their immediate surroundings, especially on drainage channels in front of their shops or stalls, thereby blocking them, which will lead to unnecessary erosion when it rains and create an offensive odour in the market space.

To make matters worse, some markets create illegal dump-sites within their space, especially at the back, which have become a haven for rodents, vectors and flies that feed and perch on the commodities that they sell to the public.

These illegal dumpsites aside from aiding the spread of diseases, also lead to fire outbreaks in markets, notably that of Lafenwa Market in Abeokuta months back. So the state government will not allow such issues to happen in any of its markets hence the need for proper waste disposal, as any market found flouting this directive will be shut.

To avoid such, Hunye called on the market men and women to imbibe the spirit of proper waste disposal in their different markets and cooperate with the OGWMA for a waste-free and clean environment by paying their government-subsidized waste bills when due, which will rub-off on the general well-being of the society.
