Rescue efforts continue after Tuesday’s breach of the Kakhovka Dam – which flooded 30 communities along the Dnipro River, according to a Ukrainian Minister.

Erik Tollefsen, from the organisation’s weapons contamination unit, said that before the flooding, the location of the mines was established.

The mines have now “shifted location”, moving downstream and also into populated areas.

Tollefsen says most of the landmines are victim-activated, and are usually triggered by people stepping on them or activating them in a slightly different way.

Dislodged landmines have sparked major concerns for residents in the Kherson region, the Red Cross has warned.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been left without drinking water, officials say, and the Ukrainian army has used drones to drop bottles to some residents.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has visited the flood-hit region of Kherson where he said the priority was to “protect lives and help people as much as possible”.

During his visit on Thursday, the Ukrainian leader also went to a medical facility and met people evacuated from the region.

The president earlier appealed for international effort to help people and accused agencies of failing to help, including the UN.
