Lagos Lawyers Protest Over Colleague Shot Dead By Police Officer

A group of lawyers have taken to the streets in parts of Lagos metropolis to protest the killing of a female lawyer on Christmas day, allegedly by a police officer in Ajah.

The protesting lawyers, who are members of the Lagos branch of Nigeria Bar Association and Etiosa Lawyers Forum, marched to the Ajiwe police station in Ajah.

The divisional police officer of the station, Alfred Ogwu, told the protesting lawyers that the matter has been transferred from the station.

The police officer was attempting to stop the lawyer, Bolanle Raheem and her family members, while driving back home from a Christmas day church service.

The officer shot the car while attempting to make a u-turn under the Ajah bridge.

In the process, the lawyer, hit by bullets, was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

Meanwhile, police have arrested an assistant superintendent of police who allegedly shot the lawyer dead.

Spokesman of the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Sunday said the officer now in police custody, has been moved to the state criminal and investigations department.

The police spokesman condoled the family of the lawyer.
