IGP Blames Separatist Agitators, Desperate Politicians For Abeokuta INEC Office Attack

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, has partly blamed separatists agitators and desperate politicians in the south west region for the recent attack on the office of the independent national electoral commission (INEC) in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital.

Several items including ballot papers, permanent voter cards were damaged during the November 10 arson attack on INEC’S office at Iyana mortuary in Ogun state’s capital.

The police chief, represented by deputy inspector general in-charge of operations, Dandaura Mustapha, spoke on the attack while appearing before the ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives investigating the recent attacks on INEC offices.

The IGP said attack on INEC offices in Ogun and Osun States were sponsored by separatist agitators who opposed the 2023 polls.

He named others suspected to be behind the attack as including failed and desperate politicians who could not win the 2023 polls on the platform of any political party.

We reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) assured all eligible voters whose permanent voter cards (PVC) were burnt in the recent arson attack on its office in Abeokuta, that they will vote in the 2023 polls. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, said the 65,699 PVC burnt during the attack, would be replaced before the end of this year.

Mahmoud gave the assurance on Tuesday during an inspection visit to the burnt INEC office at Iyana Mortuary in Abeokuta.
