A crisis is brewing at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, following moves to jerk up the tuition fees in the Ogun state owned university.

Also fueling the crisis is the hike in fees by two private hostels operating on the campus of the university.

Sources told Rockcity FM, that the tuition fee in management sciences had been increased to N250,000 from N114,000, Sciences (N250,000), Education (N210,000), Law and Engineering (N300,000) while Health Sciences is around N350,000.

Although, the university is not in session, the institution’s student’s union government is engaging the school’s management on the fresh increase in the tuition fees, which have not been made public.

On Monday, the student union government asked students to ignore any figure on the new tuition fee or the hostels’ fees, adding they are still engaging the authorities on the issue.

The student leaders visited the two private hostels, and registered their protests at their poor facilities, for which they are charging between N100,000 and N175,000 per session, instead of one year, which is applicable in other universities.

The operators of private hostels have written the universities authorities to obtain approval for their proposed increase in fees which is between 25 to 40 per cent.

The university’s 2023/2024 session ended last December 8, but the authorities are yet to notify the existing students of the returning date, and fees payable for the new session.

Sources told Rockcity FM that the new academic session had been fixed for January 2 or 3, 2024, yet the students are still being kept in the dark over the tuition payable for the forthcoming session.

The new tuition fees still under the wrap, leaked over the weekend, forcing the student’s union leaders to swing into action.
