Court Orders INEC To List Ogun Labour Candidates For 2023 Polls

A Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to list the names of the candidates of the Ogun State Labour party for the 2023 general election.

Candidates whose names are to be listed by INEC on its website are three senatorial, nine House of Representatives and 26 state House of Assembly.

Justice Akintoye Aluko gave the order while ruling in a suit filed by the party to compel INEC to list the names of all its candidates for the 2023 polls in Ogun State.

The judge faulted INEC for failing to list the Labour Party’s candidates for the polls, saying that the Electoral Act 2022 was superior to INEC over electoral guidelines.

According to the judge, section 31 of the Electoral Act allows political parties to substitute primaries not later than 90 days to the polls.

The plaintiff lawyer, Monday Mawah speaking to newsmen after the ruling, said the non-listing of the Ogun Labour Party’s candidate was not part of the case brought before the judge.
