Court Okays The Use Of Temporary Voter Card During March 18 Polls

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the use of Temporary Voter Card (TVC) during the forthcoming governorship and houses of assembly polls.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu gave the order while delivering judgment on Thursday in a suit filed by some people seeking the use of the temporary voter card.

The judge ruled that temporary voter card holders should be allowed to vote since they were duly registered and captured in the data base of INEC.

Justice Egwuatu, however, said he was unable to grant prayer three, which was to allow every eligible voter with a TVC to vote because the suit was not filed in a representative capacity.

Responding to the judgement, INEC faulted the judge for ordering it to allow the use of temporary voter card to contest during the March 18 polls.

The electoral body said the judgement violates the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, which stipulates that only permanent voter card could be used for voting in elections.

INEC, however, said it was yet to get a certified true copy of the judgement.
