Council Of States Asks CBN To Release New Naira Notes Or Recirculate Old Ones

The Council of States have supported the redesigned naira notes introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the implementation of its cashless policy.

The council however is worried over the implementation of the policy. It asks the CBN to make more of the redesigned naira notes available.

Alternatively, the CBN was asked to recirculate the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes to ease the suffering of the poorest of the pooe Nigerians.

Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami briefed the state house correspondents on the outcome of the hybrid meeting held on Thursday morning at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

On the 2023 polls the council said, it was on course.

The meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, The Senate President, The Speaker of the House of Reps, The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and The Justice Minister.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, and two former heads of state, Generals Abdusalam Abubakr and Yakubu Gowon also attended the meeting.

Former President Obasanjo joined the meeting virtually along with Governors of Ogun, Sokoto, Kebbi, Plateau, Ebonyi, Osun, Jigawa, Nasarawa, as well as Deputy Governors of Benue, Nasarawa and Enugu States.

Others who attended the meeting physically were Nigeria’s former Chief Justices, Alfa Belgore, and  Mahmud Mohammed, as well as, Deputy Governors of Kwara, Taraba, Kaduna, Borno, Gombe and Lagos States.
