CJN Asks Nigerians To Reduce Their Penchant For Litigation

Nigeria’s Chief Justice (CJN), Olukayode Ariwo-Ola, has pleaded with Nigerians to reduce their level of litigation and adopt alternative dispute resolution.

He accuses them of always rushing to courts after every disagreement.

According to the Chief Justice, litigation by Nigerians are the highest in the world and are putting undue pressure on the judiciary, especially the supreme court.

Justice Ariwo-Ola expressed his concern on Monday in Abuja, at the commencement of the 2022/2023 legal year of the supreme court and the inauguration of 62 barristers and solicitors to the rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

He explained that the increasing litigation has made Nigeria’s supreme court as the busiest in the world and its justices the most hard working.

During the 2021/2022 legal year alone, the Chief Justice said 1,764 motions and appeals were filed at the supreme court.

Out of these, he said the Apex court were able to hear 1,202, including 816 civil, 370 criminal and 16 political cases.
