Cholera Outbreak: Ogun Records One Death, 25 Suspected Cases

The Cholera outbreak in Ogun state has spread to seven local government areas of the state.

The local government areas are Remo North, Sagamu, Obafemi Owode, Ewekoro, Ado Odo-Ota, Ijebu North and Odeda.

According to an update on the outbreak, a total of 25 confirmed suspected cases out of which nine were confirmed, with one death.

The State Health Commissioner, Dr. Tomi Coker, on Monday, at a news conference in Abeokuta, said the worst affected local government areas are Ado Odo Ota, Abeokuta North, Abeokuta South, Obafemi Owode and Ijebu North.

She said the first suspected cases recorded in the state last June 12, tested positive, adding that both had a travelling history to Lagos, 24 hours before they were detected.

The commissioner further explained that eight of the confirmed nine cases had contact with Lagos and six of them took tiger nut drinks.

Coker said the state had activated free surveillance and emergency treatment activities in all the state’s 20 local government areas.

She advised members of the public to alert the ministry on suspected cases.

According to her, the ministry is prepared to respond to calls on the following lines: 0803 864 2812; 0703 421 4893 and 0808 425 0881 on short notice.

Meanwhile, fifty three people have died in the cholera outbreak as at Monday, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)

Director General of the Centre, Dr. Jide Idris, gave an update on his X post on Monday.

According to him, suspected cases of the deadly disease has increased to 1,528 in 107 local government areas in 31 states.

He said the national cholera emergency operation Centre had been activated to respond swiftly to contain the spread of the disease.
