Buhari Backs FIRS to Collect Federal Taxes

President Buhari has backed the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in tussle with other federal agencies in collection of federal taxes on behalf of federal government.

Challenging FIRS in collection of some of the taxes are revenue mobilization and fiscal commission and Nigeria customs service.

Also, Rivers and Lagos state government are asking courts to stop firs from collecting Value Added Tax (VAT) in their respective states.

The president made the clarification at the second annual national tax dialogue in Abuja.

Buhari said that 2021 finance bill empowers only firs to solely collect taxes for federal government.

He explained that the clarification was necessary to spate tax payers of multiple tax compliance.

According to the president, multiplicity of tax administration is undesirable and creates uncertainty and instability in the economy.
